An Idea and A Commission
Taking a previous sushi set as inspiration, a friend of ours wanted to have a platter in a similar vein. The first thing we did was agree on a size: 14.5″ x 7″.
02.
Which Blue?
Rather than use the dichroic glass strip in the sushi plates, our friend wanted a strip of blue glass. But which blue?
03.
Turquoise
Seeing all the different blues together is a bit deceptive because of how the eye sees color. Here’s the Turquoise by itself. We picked this color and the Egyptian Blue to make two platters, one of which I’ll keep.
04.
Ready to Fuse
These two platters are ready to fuse (on 10 x 20″ shelves covered with ThinFire paper). I snuck a few Marigold Yellow earrings onto the shelf too. 🙂
05.
All Fused
These platters and earrings are now completely fused. In other words, after having melted and then cooled, they are each one piece of glass.
06.
Time to Slump
I’m using the Rectangular Slumper mold (8925). I’ll be heating the glass in the kiln again, but not to as high a temperature as above. Instead, I’ll heat it just enough that it will soften and settle into the mold. There’s a fresh coast of primer (which looks pinkish) on the mold, which prevents the glass from sticking to it.

Elegant Simplicity
Sometimes I over-complicate projects. But here, designed by our friend, is an example of fused glass where less is more. I adore the minimalist black background and then the slim strip of subtle color to the left. Above is the Turquoise Blue and below the Egyptian Blue (which I kept).

Stunning, yet tasteful.
I totally agree!
